Recently the Senate changed very long standing rules dealing with presidential confirmations to only require a simple majority vote. The sad thing, in this case, is that it didn’t make a difference when it came to the confirmation of Anne Patterson. Patterson, who is despised in Egypt as being a “stooge” of the Muslim Brotherhood, won confirmation on a vote of 78-16. She will now oversee US foreign policy in all of the Middle East instead of just Egypt. While all of the votes against confirmation came from Republicans, the number of affirmations means that many Republicans in the Senate voted for her as well. Some of those who voted for her confirmation include:

  • John Cornym (R-TX)
  • Kelly Ayotte (R-NH)
  • Orrin Hatch (R-UT)
  • Richard Burr (R-NC)
  • Saxby Chambliss (R-GA)
  • Bob Corker (R-TN)
  • Jim Inhofe (R-OK)
  • Mitch McConnell (R-KY)
  • Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
  • Pat Toomey (R-PA)

Interestingly and perhaps telling in how close they are to the Muslim Brotherhood situation in Egypt, neither John McCain or Lindsey Graham voted one way or the other for the confirmation. One way or the other, it appears that Patterson will now be able to support the efforts of the Muslim Brotherhood on a much larger scale.
